Cisgenic Plants

Plants into which only genes of their own species have been introduced using genetic engineering are known as cisgenic plants. In contrast to transgenic plants, these genes and other elements of the introduced gene construct come exclusively from the gene pool of the respective plant species. The resulting plants are called cisgenic (cis = this side (the species boundary)) in contrast to transgenic plants (trans = beyond), into which genes from other species have been transferred.
